We use technology in all areas of our lives — why not use it to help us grow better gardens?

From planning to planting to plant identification, we’ve gathered a list of 6 useful gardening apps that will help guide your green thumb. The best part — just about every app on this list is free to download!

While we hunker up inside through winter, now is a great time to preview these apps and see which ones you like best, just in time for the warmth of spring to arrive in a few months.

(To find any of the apps listed below whether using an iPhone or Android, simply open your app store on your phone and search for the name of the app.)

Get growing guidance:

From Seed to Spoon Gardening

This free app offers complete growing guides for 100+ vegetables, herbs, and fruits, as well as tons of other gardening tips, like how to identify and eliminate garden pests naturally. Additionally, you can customize planting dates specific to your growing zone based on your GPS location.

This app was created by a couple from Oklahoma who created an urban backyard food farm. With more than 5.3k reviews and a 4.8/5 star rating, you can trust that this app offers real value.

Plan & track your garden:

Farm Your Yard

Farm Your Yard is a free app developed by the nonprofit organization, FarmYourYard. It’s primarily a planning app, allowing you to create a personalized growing calendar and track your progress through plant journals.

Planter: Garden Planner

This easy-to-use garden planning app helps you plan your garden layout. Additionally, it includes companion planting info (so there’s no accidents in placing the wrong plants next to each other), as well as a planting calendar to help you track when to start seeds and transplant.

The best part? It’s free.

Identify Plants with the Snap of a Photo:

Garden Answers

This is the #1 downloaded garden identification app in the world — and for a reason. With an internal catalog of more than 20,000 plants, this app allows you to identify a plant through the snap of a photo. If that wasn’t impressive enough, it’s free!

If you have more questions about your newly-identified plant, the app can give you the answers through its keyword search feature. With this app in your backpocket (literally), you’ll become a master at identifying any and all plant species in no time.

Inspire your next garden project:

My Garden: Inspiration to Grow

Sure, Pinterest tends to be the default for finding project inspiration, but we love that this app is dedicated exclusively to gardening. The free My Garden app is all about the inspiration — after you input garden preferences and local conditions, it will offer you a list of plants and projects to inspire your time outside.

Keep your indoor plants thriving:

Planta: Keep your plants alive

We can’t leave out our indoor plant friends, can we? This app allows you to “keep your plants alive” by offering smart care reminders based on the plant plus your conditions (location, light in the room, etc.). These reminders will ping you when it’s time to water, fertilize, mist, clean, and repot. Never forget to water your ZZ plant again!

You can also access step-by-step guides, plant recommendations based on your skill level, and a plant identification feature. This app does come with a subscription cost ranging from $7.99 – $35.99. But with a 4.8 / 5 star rating and more than 47,000 reviews, this is an app you can trust.
