SUMMARY:Cori's Candles (and more) Open House
DESCRIPTION:Cori’s Candles (and more) Open House\nSaturday\, November 20\, 1-4 pm…drop in anytime\nFree Soy Candlemaking Class at 1:30 and 2:30 pm\nSoy wax vs. paraffin wax… which type of candle is more sustainable?\nParaffin wax costs less to produce\, making it the popular choice among your typical store-bought candles and major home scents retailers. \nHowever\, there are major differences—both for your health and for the health of the environment—between paraffin wax and soy wax. \nKeep reading for 5 reasons soy wax candles are more sustainable than paraffin wax candles. \nSoy wax is all-natural and renewable.\nSoy wax is made from—wait for it—soybeans! \nParaffin wax\, meanwhile\, is made from petroleum (think: crude oil)\, a fossil fuel that cannot be renewed. Not only is crude oil nonrenewable\, the collection process harms the environment. Last but not least\, paraffin wax in solid form is not biodegradable. \nBut there’s no limit to the amount of soybeans we can grow. And because soy wax is plant-based\, it is 100% biodegradable. \nParaffin wax candles produce toxins when burned.\nSoy wax isn’t just better for the environment; it’s also better for your health. \nA 2009 study by South Carolina State University found that paraffin wax candles produce harmful chemicals when burned. \nAccording to the lead researcher of the study\, “The paraffin candles we tested released unwanted chemicals into the air. For a person who lights a candle every day for years or just uses them frequently\, inhalation of these dangerous pollutants drifting in the air could contribute to the development of health risks like cancer\, common allergies and even asthma.” \nOn the other hand\, researchers did not find that soy wax candles emit any harmful chemicals. \nSoy wax gives off less soot.\nWhile both soy wax and paraffin wax give off black soot while burning\, soy wax gives off noticeably less soot. \nSoy wax supports American farmers.\nAmerica leads the world in soybean production\, with the majority of soybean crops grown in Illinois\, Iowa\, and Indiana. When you purchase candles made from soy wax\, you’re supporting the American farmers who make a living from soybean production\, strengthening the American economy. \nSoy wax produces stronger\, longer-lasting scents—saving you money.\nSoy candles burn slower\, meaning they last longer. That means less bucks spent on purchasing new candles when one goes kaput. Additionally\, soy naturally carries fragrances well\, producing a stronger scent without the need for chemical additives to amplify the scent. \nHealthier for you\, healthier for the environment\, and better for your wallet… soy wax is a sustainable alternative to traditional paraffin wax candles. \nCheck out Cori’s Candles website to see some of the products she will have at the open house:  https://www.coricandlesnashville.com

Curing meat is a different type of fermentation which they have done for years with hams and bacon. \nBeth grew up in Jackson\, TN on a dairy farm where she and her siblings were a big part of the daily working of the dairy. SUMMARY:Stepping Stones to a Healthy Gut: Sprouts and Shoots Class
DESCRIPTION:Easy Stepping Stones to a Healthy Gut:  Sprouts and Shoots Class\nSaturday\, March 27\, 2021\nTime:  10 am – 12 noon\nCost:  $35\nincludes all instructions\, resources\, taste testing\, and seeds to begin growing!\n\n\n\n\nDid you know that the EASIEST & FASTEST vegetables to grow with the HIGHEST level of nutrition are sprouts and shoots?  One example\, Broccoli sprouts\, which have lots of fiber and protein with just a few calories. They also contain anywhere from 10 to 100 times as much glucoraphanin — the nutrient that becomes sulforaphane (cancer prevention) — as the mature vegetable. These sprouts are bursting with vitamins and other nutrients. \nSprouts are the premature growth of a plant from a germinated seed.  All vegetable plants will develop into a sprout shortly after germination.  Examples of seeds to sprout in a jar are clover\, alfalfa\, broccoli\, radish\, mustard\, and kale.  Beans or legumes can be sprouted in a jar and take less time.  Peas\, lentils\, garbanzos\, and adzuki are only a few examples of legumes to sprout. \nShoots are very small plants that you can eat before they develop their secondary leaves.  Shoots are also packed with nutrition and provide pre-biotics which are needed to feed healthy gut bacteria.  Examples of shoots are green peas and sunflowers.  Both are full of fiber\, protein\, and vitamins…much more than a typical salad. \nWhat will you learn in the Sprouts and Shoots Class?\n1.  How easy it is to grow sprouts in a jar on your kitchen counter in just a few days without any soil or sunlight!\n2.  The longer\, but just as easy process of growing shoots using soil and artificial lighting.\n3.  The types of containers\, soil and seeds you will need to grow your own shoots and sprouts.\n4.  The amazing nutritional value of sprouts and shoots & the yummy taste of REALLY FRESH produce.\n5.  How shoots and sprouts will feed your good gut bacteria to give you a healthier gut and better immune system! \nWhat will you take home from the Sprouts and Shoots Class?\n1.  A ton of resources that will help you get started:  books\, YouTube videos\, seed vendors\, supply vendors\, and nutritional information.\n2.  Seeds to take home with you for your first batch of shoots and sprouts. \nJoin Catilin VanKeuren at Stoney Creek Farm for her step-by-step class on Growing Sprouts and Shoots by signing up below: \n\n\n\n\n \nGuest Host Bio\nCaitlin VanKeuran is an avid gardener\, Sunset Middle School Orchestra teacher\, and violinist.  She enjoys growing all types of sprouts and sunflower shoots and developed a business model for growing and selling the products with her Joyful Sprouts line of fresh products.  Caitlin’s bubbly personality and a terrific sense of humor will entertain and teach you the basics of growing healthy sprouts and shoots.  You will see how easy and fast you can produce healthy delicious food that will feed your good gut bacteria and improve your immune system. \n

SUMMARY:How to Build a Temporary Greenhouse
DESCRIPTION:How to Build a Temporary Greenhouse\nSaturday\, February 27th\, 1:00 – 3:00 pm\nCost:  $15\, includes material list\, diagram and demonstration \n\n\n\n\n\n\nIf you want to learn how to build an inexpensive\, temporary greenhouse that is easy to put up and take down each year\, then this class is for you!  Olin Funderburk has been building our farm’s greenhouse structure for the last 11 years and is able to re-use materials year to year.   Olin will provide you with a materials list and allow you to participate in building the structure\, so you can see how easy it is to erect. \nYou will also see the re-purposed tables and learn of other “free” stands to use inside while growing your seedlings.  Planting stations are easy too…just some scrap lumber and a plastic tote for the soil.  You don’t have to spend much money to grow your all of your garden plants from seed.

SUMMARY:SOLD OUT - All Natural Dairy Delights - How to Make Your Own Healthy Yogurt\, Butter and Buttermilk
DESCRIPTION:Sold OUT -All Natural Dairy Delights – How to Make Healthy Yogurt\, Butter and Buttermilk\nSaturday\, February 6th\, 10 am – 12 noon\nCost:  $35 which includes all instruction and supplies\nIf you would like to be on the waitlist for this class if anyone cancels…call 615-591-0015 \nIf you enjoy dairy products from the grocery store\, but may be concerned about the questionable ingredient list of preservatives\, dyes\, and extra sugar that seem to be in most of them\, then this class is for you!  Culturing dairy is one of the easiest processes for even busy moms to accomplish at home…AND you control the ingredients to keep them healthy.  Let Terri Taylor\, from Taylor Family Farms\, teach you the art of culturing dairy from whole milk\, just like your grandparents did. \n \nAbout Terri Taylor\nTerri is the co-owner of the Taylor Family Farm with her husband\, John.  They have raised and homeschooled 9 children on their homestead of 17 years in Ethridge Tennessee while operating a thriving dairy and meat business which delivers all over Middle Tennessee. All of their products are non-GMO\, organic and pasture raised because their homestead business feeds the family too.  Talk about a busy mom!  If anyone can show you how easy it is to culture dairy for home use…Terri is the expert. \nWhile she grew up with knowledge of healthy eating and food sensitivities from her own experiences growing up\, Terri’s further learning continued to increase as her oldest daughter was born with gluten intolerance (when it wasn’t even a thing) from compromised gut health. That really helped her learn more about gut health and the importance of fermenting nourishing foods. \n \nAbout Taylor Family Farm\nNestled in beautiful middle Tennessee\, they raise 100% non-gmo\, grass-fed beef\, pastured chicken and pork on the cozy family farm. The Taylors believe in healthy food\, healthy people\, and a  healthy community. That’s why they have chosen to farm and feed our local neighbors\, and surrounding communities including you! Everything they grow is raised with love and care to ensure the highest quality and nutrition for their customers. All ration fed animals are fed our 100% non-gmo feed milled on the farm.
