Curing meat is a different type of fermentation which they have done for years with hams and bacon. \nBeth grew up in Jackson\, TN on a dairy farm where she and her siblings were a big part of the daily working of the dairy. She graduated from Middle Tennessee State University with a bachelor’s degree in Home Economics Education. She was a stay-at-home mom to their 4 children\, homeschooling and being very involved in their education at public school. Teaching Sunday School\, substitute teaching at school\, and then being a kindergarten teacher assistant for 13 years are some of the ways she has been involved in education. However\, the somewhat old-fashioned idea of homemaking has always been the most important aspect of Beth’s life.

SUMMARY:Grow Your Own Sprouts and Shoots
DESCRIPTION:Grow Your Own Sprouts and Shoots\nSaturday\, February 18\, 10 – 11:30 am\nCost $40 which includes all instructions and tastings\nDid you know that the EASIEST & FASTEST vegetables to grow with the HIGHEST level of nutrition are sprouts and shoots?  One example\, Broccoli sprouts\, which have lots of fiber and protein with just a few calories. They also contain anywhere from 10 to 100 times as much glucoraphanin — the nutrient that becomes sulforaphane (cancer prevention) — as the mature vegetable. These sprouts are bursting with vitamins and other nutrients. \n\n\n\n\nSprouts are the premature growth of a plant from a germinated seed.  All vegetable plants will develop into a sprout shortly after germination.  Examples of seeds to sprout in a jar are clover\, alfalfa\, broccoli\, radish\, mustard\, and kale.  Beans or legumes can be sprouted in a jar and take less time.  Peas\, lentils\, garbanzos\, and adzuki are only a few examples of legumes to sprout. \nShoots are very small plants that you can eat before they develop their secondary leaves.  Shoots are also packed with nutrition and provide pre-biotics which are needed to feed healthy gut bacteria.  Examples of shoots are green peas and sunflowers.  Both are full of fiber\, protein\, and vitamins…much more than a typical salad. \nWhat will you learn in the Class?\n1.  How easy it is to grow sprouts in a jar on your kitchen counter in just a few days without any soil or sunlight!\n2.  The longer\, but just as easy process of growing shoots using soil and artificial lighting.\n3.  The types of containers\, soil\, and seeds you will need to grow your own shoots and sprouts.\n4.  The amazing nutritional value of sprouts and shoots & the yummy taste of REALLY FRESH produce.\n5.  How shoots and sprouts will feed your good gut bacteria to give you a healthier gut and better immune system! \nWhat will you take home from the Sprouts and Shoots Class?\n1.  A ton of resources that will help you get started:  books\, YouTube videos\, seed vendors\, supply vendors\, and nutritional information.\n2.  Seeds to take home with you for your first batch of shoots and sprouts.

We will have several sites hidden around the farm ready for you to find. This is a fantastic way for new geocachers to get acquainted with the game. \nBring your own GPS device or use your smartphone to find the caches.  Coordinates and instructions will be provided prior to the event\, and we will be on hand to answer any questions and help get you started. This is a self-led event.  You will need to bring small “treasures” to trade as the general etiquette of geocaching is ‘take a treasure\, leave a treasure‘.  Examples include small plastic bugs\, toy soldiers\, coins\, colorful stones\, keychains\, kid’s meal toys\, or other small trinkets. \n*Attention scouts – – this event could help you earn your geocaching merit badge! \n\nThe Geocaching Event will start on the back porch of the Stoney Creek Barn and go across the creek and several acres of the farm.  Geocachers should wear sturdy shoes and layered clothing depending on the weather.\n\nAfter the hike\, kids can also go feed the goats and walk around the farm/play on the swing set. Parents/Grandparents are welcome to bring a lunch and enjoy time outdoors on the farm.\n\nNote: Any parents who want to drop off older children\, must sign a farm liability waiver.\n\nStoney Creek Farm has been searching for someone to lead kid activities here in Franklin and Cori Williams is the perfect teacher for making every class FUN! We are adding more kid’s classes at affordable prices throughout the year. Your kids will LOVE her innovative teaching style!  Healthy learning environments have an effective teaching strategy where students can learn positive participation and that is what Cori emulates.\n\n\n\nTeacher Bio\nCori Williams has many talents: Teacher\, Graphic artist\, certified Tennessee Naturalist\, and has taught using the Charlotte Mason and Reggio Emilia methods. She has a true LOVE of Nature and Sustainable Living and would love to share that enthusiasm with your child.\n\nCori and her 10-year-old son are native Nashvillians and are constantly seeking new opportunities for nature hikes and effective/engaging learning experiences.

Throughout my journey\, I have gained an understanding of what environments are best for children\, how to meet their needs\, and the importance of the family and community to which they are entrusted. \nI have a Bachelor’s degree in education and have worked with the State of Tennessee in a training capacity. Also\, I have been a program director and started my own preschool; both experiences have given me a thorough understanding of our State’s requirements for children. However\, my best experience was raising my own two children over the past 30 years and watching them grow into responsible citizens with great respect for their faith\, education\, and our community. \nIn my endeavor\, to Raise Up Children\, I have partnered with Stoney Creek Farm owners\, Olin and Leigh Funderburk\, and Cori Williams\, Stoney Creek’s Children’s Director. It is our intention\, to include children in “getting back to Nature\,” but also to walk along beside parents\, as they share our vision\, to Raise Up Children. \nWe have our Nature Explorers program\, which includes preschool as well as homeschoolers. I will also be conducting training on a variety of topics covering all things children! \n
